- cafe ladro:
Cafe Ladro is a local chain of coffee stores. They make my favorite coffee in Seattle. I used to stop in their Fremont store on my way to work, and to hang out when I lived in Ballard. - clowning:
I got into clowning when I was in the Cirque de Flambe. I took several classes in it. I liked that it was nonverbal, and the physical skills it required. But I didn't have the personal ooomph to get into it as deeply as it demanded. - elisem's jewelry:
elisem makes great, instantly recognizable necklaces and earrings. I added this interest when
athenais (I think) proposed everyone add it.
- history of economics:
Everything has a history, but there is no history of everything. The history of economics would study the evolution and effects on culture of the most nonsciences there is. - jenny holzer:
Jenny Holzer is an artist who works with words. She started in the 70s with her truisms series, alphabetical lists of statements that were considered true, whether or not she agreed with them. The truisms were wheat-pasted all over Manhattan until she began to attract gallery attention. I have several books about her. The truisms series inspired my own Statements Seriesd. - mike royko:
Mike Royko was a columnist in Chicago during the 60s and 70s, when I was growing up. He was the last great newspaper columnist. Hard hitting, investigative, hard drinking, a total jerk in reality, but an excellent writer. - one-ring circus:
One ring circus allows the audience to see how really skilled and difficult is the work the athletes and artists are performing. Instead of families of performers in distant arenas, you see one (sometimes two, or as many as five) performers and their skills up close. I particularly like Circus Contraption, mostly because they are from Seattle and perform here a couple times a year. I also got this interest from the Cirque de Flambe. - pirates:
I became interested in pirates after reading Under the Black Flag, which I read because it had a quote from Patrick O'Brian on the cover. If I were a pirate, I'd be dead or crippled by now. Piracy is romanticized, mostly because of Errol Flynn movies, but it was a rough existence. Pirates, however, were the first democratic society of the Atlantic seaboard. I once mentioned that my three favorite nonfiction reading topics were postmodern sexuality, pirates, and circus, andsupergee said that if I wrote that book I'd have a bestseller. Hah!
- smith & mighty:
They're a dub DJ duo from the UK. I like "Big World, Small World" and "Life is..." - truby trio:
Truby Trio are a DJ trio from Germany. I have their "Elevator Music" CD but it doesn't have "Hi Jazz" on it, which I really like. Rainier Truby, after whom the trio is named, also put together one of the Brazilian compilation series I like, Glucklich. (I don't know what it means.)
